25.Sep.2012 Sauna Weight Loss

In this article we answer the popular sauna weight loss question. I absolutely love sitting in the sauna after a session on the treadmill and bike at the gym. I do my stretching routine in the sauna and I feel that stretching and sweating in that heat completes my workout! I do walk out of there feeling lighter and more relaxed, but have I lost any weight just by sitting in the sauna?
saunaThe answer is yes, but most of it isn’t permanent. The weight I have lost is water weight (and some calories, see below), which will come back as soon as I drink anything. Our bodies are made up of 70 percent water, so even though we sweat, as soon as we drink, our bodies absorb that liquid. I drink lots of water while I’m in the sauna, so I feel like I’m flushing myself.

You Do Burn Some Calories

Some of the weight loss from a sauna is real. The increased heart rate in a sauna will burn calories. Calories burned in the sauna vary according to weight and height, time of exposure and temperature of the sauna. Some studies estimate about 300 extra calories are burned in typical sauna session. A person weighing around 160 pounds will burn burn about 300 calories during a 30-minute session in the sauna. That number changes based on your individual BMR, in addition to the temperature settings in the sauna and the amount of time you spend in the heat.
