South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet was designed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston. Despite it's seemingly flashy title, the diet carries substance. It focuses on changing your lifestyle, changing the way you eat, losing weight and improving your health.

The Book

Since the introduction of Dr. Agatston's best selling book The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss, the diet has become one of the most popular programs known to man.

How It Works

Phase 1:

This is the most restrictive phase designed to get your blood sugar and glucose levels under control while you lose weight. You'll eat low glycemic foods like high-fiber fruits/veggies and healthy fats to bring those levels under control to stop cravings. You'll avoid most carbohydrates and enjoy cheeses, chicken breasts, lean cuts of beef, eggs, and high-fiber vegetables.

Phase 2:

This is the long-term phase. In addition to what you've been eating in Phase 1, you'll eat whole-grains, whole-wheat pastas, and even more fresh fruits and vegetables. The Phases are very easy to follow with meal plans and recipes provided by Dr. Agatston. You remain in this phase, losing weight at a healthy rate of pace, until you reach your goal weight.

Phase 3:

In this phase you'll take everything you learned previously and commit it to a lifestyle to maintain weight.

Recipes and Meal Plans

In Dr. Agatston's book, you'll find that recipes and meal plans make up a good portion of the book. You can find about 1000 more recipes online.

Dr. Agatston has designed about 200 more simple recipes in his recent cookbook.

As a quick reference for figuring out which foods you should have and which to avoid, you can use the Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide, by Dr. Agatston.
