25.Sep.2012 Weight Loss Retreats Offer Full Concentration on Weight Loss

Weight Loss Retreats

Written by: Christina Valhouli of Forbes.com

Some consider weight loss retreats to shed those extra pounds. Fortunately the days of “fat farms,” group torture and lettuce-only lunches are ancient history. Today’s health spas focus on long-term lifestyle changes that you can take home with you–in beautiful, luxurious settings with a lot more than a few greens on your plate. In fact, most spas understand that the only greens their guests want to see are golf greens and it’s always possible to squeeze a round or two in the links, or even a massage, in between those aerobics and yoga classes.

While most people can lose a few pounds over a week’s stay, don’t expect anything more dramatic–that would be unhealthy, not to mention unpleasant. Of course, it all depends on just how much extra weight, andmoney, you want to drop. Clinique La Prairie in Switzerland charges 15 grand for its 12-day treatment and many others are equally pricey. But if results–and the ability to button your trousers again–are what matter to you, you’ll be sure to come away with a lot more (or less) than just a thin wallet.

Cal-a-Vie – Weight Loss Retreats

This San Diego-based resort is consistently rated one of the most expensive weight loss retreats in the world but, if being pampered while you firm up and slim down is your thing, satisfied customers claim it’s worth every penny. Guests stay in their own Spanish-style villas, and most mornings begin with a hike through the resort’s 200-acre property. “Everyone here will lose weight naturally because our menus are low in calories and high in nutrition,” says director of marketing Janet Kane. And, yes, meals do include dessert. For the rest of the day, “everything is geared towards staying active.” Guests (Cal-a-Vie only admits 24 people at a time) can choose from classes in spinning, aerobics or nia, which is a new discipline blending yoga and dance. Cal-a-Vie also offers a cooking class, so you can duplicate what you learn at home. A three-day stay costs around $2,400, while a one-week package ranges from $4,995 to $5,395.

Clinique La Prairie – Weight Loss Retreats

Clinique La Prairie

The hills are alive…with the sound of electro-stimulation. The Clinique La Prairie Institute in Geneva, Switzerland, famous for its cutting-edge anti-aging technologies (such as injecting clients with live sheep-embryo cells to boost the immune system) is equally renowned for its 12-day, $15,000 BeautyMed weight-loss treatment. This machine-based program is better suited for those who want to shave off a few pounds, says appropriately named manager Nicole Hungerkamp. “We are not for fat people,” she says. CLP offers a one-week slimming program where guests receive 1.5 hours of electro-stimulation a day, which encourages lymphatic drainage and stimulates the muscles and skin. CLP also offers an array of laser and electro therapies, such as the “Corpolux” and the “Corpotrim,” which was originally devised to keep NASA astronauts in shape when in flight. One 17-minute treatment is equivalent to an hour of aerobics. When not being hooked up to machines, guests meet with nutritionists and fitness experts to come up with a personal program. “We stand for life changes, not a quick change,” says Hungerkamp. This is one of the most uniqueweight loss retreats available to mankind.
